Weekly Overview February 20, 2018

We have received so many wonderful Black History projects!  Your child has signed up for their day to present their project!  They also went home with a guide to help direct their talk.  Hope it was helpful.

Tomorrow is our Black History Month Assembly.   The program is tomorrow night!  Come and see our displays!!

Language Arts:  This week we will continue to read and write about our Black History Month projects.

Homework:  Your child will have a writing assignment that is due FRIDAY!!!  They should write two or three facts that they learned about their African-American person and one question that they still have.  They can illustrate their work.

Math:  Lessons 6.4-6.6 this week.  We are reading and working n number stories (2-digit addition and subtraction).  We are recording some of our information in graphs.

Homelinks:  6.4 through 6.6 Tuesday through Thursday.

Social Studies:  All week we will be listening to students give their report on their person.  Your child signed up and knows what day they will give their report.

Science:  I will try and finish our story on Nepal and Tarpuls and we will have an erosion lesson Thursday afternoon.

Weekly Overview February 12, 2018

Hope everyone had a fun snow day!  I sure remember as a kid, how fun that was!!

Please remember that the Black History Month Projects are due this Friday!  Hope it is going well!  Your child should have, at least, 2 or 3 paragraphs written at this point!!  The whole report can be presented on a poster, or as a written research paper-whatever works for you!

The Gallery walk is Wednesday, February 21st!!  There is a grandma dessert competition!  A second flyer is going home today!

Your child’s report card is going home today.  Please schedule an appointment if you would like one, or if I have requested one.  You can email me, or write me a note and I will get back to you.

There is also a canned food drive going on this week!  Please have your child bring non-perishable items in if you can:)

We are in need of snacks again!!  Actually, I should say that we are out of snacks:(

Language Arts:  Your children will start to present their projects as soon as they start to come in.  I will send home a “Talk Rubric” to help organize their 2-3 minute presentation.  Thanks for your help in this!!  Your child will sign up for their talk when they bring their project in.  Thanks

We will continue to read about and discuss African-American people we should know all week.  Our reading will focus around these stories.

Homework:  Your child should work on their project each night and turn it in no later than this Friday.  Thanks

Your child should also be reading 20-30 minutes each night.  Please help your child with this, if needed.

Math:  Your child took their Unit 5 assessment last week.  I will get them to you sometime this week.  We will begin Unit 6 today.  The unit focused on writing and answering number stories.  We will also work on solving 2-digit addition problems.  Practice these as home if you see that your child does not have this secured.  Thanks.  We will practice in class.  We will also be working at bar graphs.  We will complete lessons 6.1-6.4 this week.

Homelinks:  6.1-6.4- Monday through Thursday.

Social Studies:  Our focus is on Black History Month.  We are also working our way through second-step, our building classroom community program.

Science:  Can your child show you where Nepal is on a map?  Can they explain what is happening in a village there?  What is a TarPul and what are we learning about erosion?


Weekly Overview February 5, 2018

Happy Monday everyone!!

Thanks for the snacks coming in-we go through 5 snacks each week!!

Some parents have asked me about supplies.  We could use more colored pencils and markers!!  Thanks for bringing extras in, if you are able!!  Tissues (Kleenex) is also needed.  Thanks

The second semester is over and we are on to the second half of second grade!!  So excited!!  Report cards go home this week.  Please schedule an appointment with me if I have requested it!!  Thanks so much!  It is so fun working with smart, great students!!

Language Arts:  It is Black History Month and we will be focusing a lot of our reading, writing, and social studies work on African-Americans that we should know and the history behind our country.  We will also be talking about contractions and ordinal numbers this week.  Practice at home!!  Thanks

I hope you got your child’s “old” name tag.  Please use it as a guide to practice all words and information on it!  Thanks

Homework:  Each night your child should do some work on the African-American Project.  Please guide them in learning more about the person that they have chosen.  They should complete one to two paragraphs each week.  The final due date is February 16th.  Thanks for all your help in this.  I will also give the kids time in class to do some research, and ask your child about this at home.  They should have taken notes when we do this in class, so this can also be added to their report.

As always, please make sure that your child is reading each night.

Math:  We will finish lesson 5.10-working with money and counting and adding.  We will go on to lesson 5.11 and 5.12, then we will have our Unit Test 5 this Thursday.    A review will come home Wednesday night for practice.  We will be working on adding two-digit numbers this week.  We will focus on two different strategies.  Practice these at home.

Look for your child’s  Math Journal 1 coming home this week and complete any pages with your child that we did not get to or that you think your child needs extra practice on.  Thanks

Homework:  5.10 and 5.11-Monday and Tuesday.  Then, a practice test will go home on Wednesday for homework-please return on Thursday.  Thanks

Social Studies: We will read, write, and focus on Black History Month people and events.

Science:  We are reading about a true story that took place in Nepal that involves engineering and the need to cross a river.  Everyone seems really to be enjoying and learning.  Ask your children about this story.  We will also, this week, experiment with different land forms and erosion.

Weekly Overview January 29, 2018

Wow-Can’t believe how January flew by for me in the classroom!

A reminder that this Thursday is Raise your Glass!!!

Also, no school for students this Friday-it’s a professional development day.

Thanks for the few snacks coming in, but still need more-we try and have snack every day!!  Many thanks!!!

***Tonight, your child will have a packet about their Black History Month project.  Please help them decide who they want to do their project on, they should write the name on the last (back) sheet, you should sign, so I know  you are aware of this, and return the packet.  We will note who you and your child choose, then the whole packet will go home again!  You will keep and use as a helpful guide:).  The written assignment and poster is due February 16th.  You and your child have three weeks to work on it!!  Do about a paragraph or two a week and that will spread the research and project out nicely!!  I will also be sending home a guideline for the presentation soon.  Each child will have a few minute talk about their project.  Take a few days to think about it with your child and return by this Wednesday.

Have fun and thanks!!  These will all be displayed for our Gallery walk on February 21st, a Wednesday.

Language Arts:  We will be spending this week on reading and writing about African-Americans we should know and why we should know them.

Homework:  We will not have the typical writing assignment that is due each Thursday.  Just work on the Black History Month Project.  You can have your child bring in, each Thursday, what they have work on so far, if you/your child would like.

Math:  We will complete lessons 5.7 through 5.10 this week.  These lessons focus on subtraction, counting up and down on a number line and number stories.

Homework:  Your child will have Homelinks Monday through Wednesday.  On Thursday, I will give your child a number facts packet that they can work Thursday evening or Friday.  It does not need to be returned.  Thanks

Social Studies:  We will focus on Black History Month and do some research on People we should know and your child will have time to do some research and take what they learn home, to incorporate into their project.

Science:  We will work with soil, sand and silt and see how size influences the path of water.

Weekly Overview January 22, 2018

We have two new snacks today!!  Many, many thanks and please bring in a snack for 25 students if you have not done so in a while. Thanks!!

Black History Assembly is February 21st-see social studies below!!

Language Arts:  We have just finished our Guided Reading Assessments again.  Please ask your child their reading level and what they enjoy to read!  Please remember, that your child should be reading at home each night!!  Thanks and enjoy!

Homework:  Your child has a book report that is due this Thursday, just to change it up a bit.  It can be written about the whole book, or just a chapter that your child is on.  Have fun with it and help your child to turn it in this Thursday.

Math:  Lessons 5.3 through 5.6 will be completed this week.  We are focusing on money, making change, and counting up from, say, 38 cents, to 75 cents.  Help your child with this at home.  Some kids really have it, others are still needing extra practice.  Thanks for your help!!

Homelinks:  Monday through Thursday, 5.3-5.6

Science:  We have started our Unit on Land and Water!  What can your child tell you about land forms?

Social Studies:  Our Black History Month Gallery walk will be on Wednesday, February 21st this year!!  Your child will have a person that they will do a report on at home and turn it in by Friday, February 16th.  I will give the rubric out this week and this will be their language arts homework for the next several weeks.  This will give you plenty of time!!

Weekly Overview January 16, 2018

Hope everyone had a good Martin Luther King Day.  I hope your children showed you the poems we read together about Dreams by Langston Hughes and talked about the stories that we read.

Our Black History Month Assembly will be Wednesday February 21st.  More information to come.  But, your child will work on a project for display for the month of February.  I will be sending the information home next week.

We need more snacks!!  Thanks!!

Please welcome Ms. Mo to our room for the next few Mondays.  She will be doing some observations and will teach a lesson or two.  A note is going home today for you to sign in allowing your child to participate in this.  Thanks

*Please always remember to have your child wear their Green every Wednesday and gym shoes every Friday!!!

Language Arts:  We will continue our non-fiction focus through the month of January.  I am seeing your children choose to read many non-fiction books!!!  We are discussing how to figure out the meaning of a word by using the text that it is in!!

Homework:  Is your child reading each night?  Thanks!!

Your child has a writing assignment that should be worked on each night, and turned in this Thursday.  Thanks for your help.  Remember to edit the work with your child.

Math:  Today we will review work from previous units.  They will be bringing their Math Journal 1 home this week and we will start in their new Math Journal 2 tomorrow.

Unit 5 is all about addition and subtraction!  This week we will be working with coins, working with calculators, and adding and subtracting up to 3-digit numbers!!  Please work with counting coins at home!!

Homework:  Addition, subtraction, and multiplication sheets will go home today-they do not need to be returned-work on at home.

Tuesday-Thursday- Homelinks 5.1-5.3.  As always, due the next day.

Science:  We will be starting a new unit this week-Land and Water and discussion will be around landscapes and how we and nature influence them (wow-pretty relevant now:(  ).

Social Science:  We will tie our lessons into science in discussions around landscapes and recycling.  We will also continue our step 2 with lessons on emotion management.  I also hope that you have heard about our Calm Classroom activities!!

Weekly Overview January 8, 2018

Welcome to 2018!!  Hope everyone had a fun-filled two weeks of family time!!!  I’m excited to be back!!

Language Arts:  We will continue to work with non-fiction for the rest of this month.  The older grades will participate in the Ray School spelling bee this week, so we will have our own, non-competitive version in our room this week-just working on vocabulary and spelling!!

Homework:  They have a writing assignment that is due Thursday.  I am going to talk with them about academic goals that they could write about, but whatever works for your child is fine.   Due Thursday.

Math:    We will work in Unit 4 covering The Inch, The Centimeter, and perimeter and area and have  our Unit 4 assessment on Friday.

Homelinks:  Monday through Wednesday, with a review sent home for Thursday homework.

Science:  We will wrap up our Science Unit on Solids and Liquids this week by investigating changes that happen (or not) when mixing some liquids and solids.

Social Studies:  We will continue to work with our Second Step Community building Lessons and beginning a Unit on Using Our Resources.

STEM night is tomorrow from 5-6:30!  Come and have science fun!!!

Our class will be sing a song, along with the other second grade classes in our winter assembly this year!  We will be singing Feliz Navidad.  I will also send the words home to practice.  The assembly is next Friday, December 22, 2017.

Also this week…we will be taking the NWEA tests.  Probably Monday, Tuesday, and make-up Wednesday.  We have a room full of smart, wonderful second-graders, who, I am sure, will do their best:)!!

Language Arts:  We will continue to work in non-fiction books.  We will continue to focus on Main Ideas and details.  Discuss at home with their readings.  Thanks for your help.  Can they name the main idea and give you at least two details?  Can they think of a self-connection to the book they are reading?  We are also working on writing in complete, and well-structured sentences and questions.  Thanks for your help in this!!

Homework:  Your child will have a writing assignment with them today, that is due on Thursday.  As always, your child should be reading each evening.  Are they recording in their Reading Log?

Math:  We are working in Unit 4 on reading an analog clock and telling time to the 5-minute mark.  Did you see their A.M. through P.M. time frame of their day?  Hope so!!  We will be working on Place Value, even and odd numbers, comparing numbers, using base-10 blocks to show a number and continuing to work on our number facts!!  Are you practicing at home?  Thanks!!

Homework:  Homelinks Monday through Thursday.

We will have some activities around many different ways, and how different cultures celebrate holiday traditions.  A learning experience for all!!

Weekly Overview December 4, 2017

It’s December and we have a fun and busy month ahead of us!!

We need snacks!!  Your students thank you!!

Math:  We will finish up our Unit 3 Assessment today and move on to Unit 4 starting tomorrow!  This week, we will cover clocks and telling time, telling time to the nearest 5 minutes (practice at home!!), A.M. and P.M..  Unit 4 is Place Value and Measurement!

Homework:  No math homework tonight, because of our assessment today, but I will give your child a math packet that they can just do at home when you want them to.  Math facts packet:).  Homelinks Tuesday through Thursday, and look for the Unit 4 parent letter tomorrow.

Language Arts:  We will work in guided reading groups all week, our focus is still non-fiction/informational text.  We will be discussing main idea and details to support the main idea.  Ask your child about this skill when doing their reading at home.

Homework:  This week your child will write their own story.  Maybe discuss with them an animal story-we have been reading about animals and habitats in the classroom-but, really whatever they want.  Thanks for your help!

Social Studies:  We will work in our second step program this week,  discussing empathy.  We will do a lesson that focuses on land formations and weather.

Science:  Still working on Solids and liquids.  We will explore physical changes when mixing solids and liquids.  We will also do a fun little activity with The weird and Wonderful Octopus!

Weekly Overview November 27, 2017

I hope everyone had a family-filled long weekend!

Picture retake day is tomorrow!!

Please sign the form for Robocall and return to me or to the office!  We need all forms!!  Thanks

We are pretty much out of snacks, so please bring in enough for 25 students if you can!  Thanks

Our next field trip is to go to hear The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, so please return the form if you have not done so!  Thanks very much-it is due!!  I am so excited that we get to go to this!!

Remember Spirit Day is every Wednesday;  green and white should be worn!!!

Math:  Your children are loving multiplication!!  We are also working on subtraction and getting to know our addition facts quickly!!  Practice at home!

This week we will work on subtraction from 20 for the next two days, we will work with coins,, explore the rectangle, and have a unit 3 review on Thursday.  Our Unit 3 will be this Friday.

Homework:  Homelinks 3.9-3.11- Monday through Wednesday, then Unit 3 study sheet Thursday evening.

Language Arts:  This weeks story is Animal Building Homes.  We are working on non-fiction this week and our focus is comprehension-using the text and graphic features to help our comprehension.

Homework:  Your child will have their writing assignment with them today.  It is due Thursday.

Social Studies:  I am hoping to finish up our Native American unit this week!!

Science:  We have a few more lessons in our Solids and Liquids Unit, then we will do a fun, little lesson on the octopus on Thursday.

Weekly Overview November 20, 2017

Two days of school and then Happy Thanksgiving!!

Our field trip is tomorrow.  We will leave first thing in the morning, and be back to Ray about 12:30.  We will eat lunch here when we get back.  Your child can bring their lunch, or I can send them to the cafeteria to get a school lunch, whichever is better for you.  We will all eat in the classroom!!  So excited about hearing the drums and learning more about a powwow.

After this holiday, we will need more snacks!  Thanks!

Picture retake day is November 28th.

Language Arts:  We will read and write as much as we can in the next two days!!  No homework this week-a homework pass tonight!

Math:  I hope you heard that we are also working on learning about multiplication and what it means!!  Everyone was really excited, and I saw many “oh…I get it now!” moments:)!!

Homework:  They will have one math homelinks tonight.

Social Studies:  Your child all gave a presentation about their dioramas and did a wonderful job!  Ms. Neely and Ms. Thole came in for some of them!!  Great job in helping your children parents!!  Thanks!

Please look for your child’s diorama today-they will go home so you can have them over the holiday:)

Science:  We will work with different sizes of beans today and make predictions on how many beans we can hold in one hand!

Weekly Overview November 14, 2017

Hi!  Sorry, my site was acting up, but our tech help got it working again!!!

I will see you tomorrow for report card pick-up!!  Please email me if you have not signed up, or you can just stop in and sign up tomorrow.  So far, my most open time is between 4::15-5:10!!  But I have other scattered times, too.  Thanks!!

The dioramas look wonderful!  I feel that everyone has learned so much and have enjoyed their new knowledge!  Thanks for all your help!!

Please remember our field trip on November 21st!  We are going to a pow wow and it should be amazing!

Language Arts:  We will continue to work on our pop-up books related to the different Native  American cultures.  We all give our diorama presentations this week!!  And, I am seeing overall gains in our writing skills!!  I am seeing ownership in their work!!

Math:  We are working on addition and subtraction and working on 2-digit numbers.  Practice at home!!

Homework:  I will send homelinks home tonight, that will be due Thursday.  Thanks

Science:  We will be working with different sizes of beans this week, making predictions about how many we can hold, and completing some math number stories related to our science unit on liquid and solids.

Social Studies:  Knee deep into our Native American Unit!!
