Weekly Overview April 23, 2018

Welcome to Earth Week!!  We will be cleaning up the front garden of Ray School tomorrow morning!!  We will also be planting again all week!!

Science:  Along with celebrating Earth Week, we will continue to learn about, observe, and write and read about the life cycles of our insects!!  We are all so excited!  Most of the Painted-Ladies have hatched and we will probably release them on Friday.

Our meal worms are starting their metamorphosis process and our praying mantis egg sacs should hatch in a week or two.

Homework:  Your child should be working on their “Bug” project (brochure) for the next two weeks.  It is due May 4th!  Coming up!!

Math:  We will have another cumulative Unit 8 Assessment today.  Tomorrow we will start Unit 9!!  Our last unit of the year.  I have been incorporating many other math skills into our lessons, and we will continue to do so.

Unit 9 is all about Equal Shares and Whole Number Operations.  Lessons 9.1-9.3 will be completed this week.We will be working with fractions, using shapes all week.  Practice this extra at home-many students will need the extra practice.

Homework:  No homework tonight.  Unit 9 starts tomorrow and homelinks Tuesday through Thursday, 9.1-9.3, due the following day.  Thanks

Language Arts:  We are working on Poetry all week.  We are reading and writing poetry.  We will also be writing Haiku’s

this week! We spending time each day reading our leveled books.

Homework:  Work on the “Bug” project and your child should be reading at least 30 minutes each night.

Social Studies:  We are well into working on our Passports!  This is so exciting and your children are learning much about the world.  If you are able to do a presentation to the second grade class, please let me know!!  It should be about 10-15 minutes and the second graders are loving these presentations and filling up their “passports”-so fun!

Weekly Overview April 16, 2018

Good Morning to this spring snow!!!:)
To start off….we cold us snacks and tissue (Kleenex)-thanks!!

Report card pick up is this Wednesday.  Please email me with a time or send a note in-you can also see me before or after school.  Looking forward to meeting with you!  Thanks for coming in!

For Earth Day we will be cleaning up the school grounds inside the front fences!  We will be doing that tomorrow!!

Also, the second grade class is working with Ann Toebbe, an artist and 2nd grade parent, to create and paint a mural inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe!  It is outside the basement girls washroom!!  We have just started this and different students will be painting each Friday!

Please remember to stop by the book fair on Wednesday and your child can bring money in if you want them to visit the book store during the school hour.

Science:  So exciting!  Our Painted-lady larva have started to form chrysalis!!  A few of our meal worms have started the process of forming into a beetle:)!!  Our praying mantis egg sacs should hatch in a few weeks.  We are doing  a lot of observations and research to learn about the life cycles of these insects.

Homework:  Your child will have an insect homework sheet with them today to get them started on their report.  The report is due May 5, so they have plenty of time to learn about the “bug” they are interested in.   The project says insect, but it is fine if they choose something that is not classified as an “insect”  (spider, etc.)

Language Arts  (and Science):  We will continue to read our leveled books, work with poetry-both reading and writing, and research both insects and the countries that we are learning about.

Homework:  This will be the last writing assignment this week in Poetry again.  Starting next week, your child should just be working on their insect project for their language arts homework.  Thanks  The poetry is due this Thursday.

Math:  We will complete lessons 8.9-8.12 and will be taking the Unit 8 assessment this Friday.

The lessons continue to work with 2 and 3-dimensional  shapes and multiplication.  We are also measuring with both centimeters and inches and working on accuracy.

Homework:  Homelinks Monday and Tuesday-turn in Tuesday on Thursday, and Thursday will be homelinks 8.11, due Friday.  Thanks

Social Studies:  We have had a presentation on Japan and we will learn about Belgium tomorrow!  Please send in a note or email me if you would like to present to second grade about another country!!  We have begun working in our Passports!!  So exciting!!

Science:  Besides all our our insect observations and research, we are also watching our plants and learning about the life cycle of plants, (as well as the life cycle of insects).

Weekly Overview April 9, 2018

We all woke up to a snowy Monday!!  We have a busy week planned here!

Thanks for the snacks that came in last week!

Report card pick up is next Wednesday, April 18th.  Please email with a time that is good for you or I will also be outside with a schedule and you can sign up then.

Science:  Hopefully you have heard that our Painted-lady larva, meal worms and preying mantis egg sacs have arrived and we are already observing and learning about these insects!!  We will do lots of observing, reading, writing, and learning about these insects and their environments.  We can use a bit of oatmeal, apples, and potatoes to help feed our insects! Thanks

Homework:  Your child should be thinking about an insect that they would like to do a report on.  A guideline will go out this Thursday, but the report is not due until May 5th, so plenty of time to plan and have fun with it!!!

Social Studies: *** We are also starting a passport project for social studies and your children will learn about different countries and creative their own “passport”  These presentations will be provided by any parent that would like to come in and present to all 3 second grade classrooms for 15-25 minutes!  If you are interested in doing this, please email me or send in a note!  We have our first presentation this Wednesday on Japan!  So exciting!!

Language Arts:  We are heavily into Poetry and hearing lots of poetry and writing our own!  Your children are really loving this!!!  We are also working on paragraph writing, and will start to do some research on our insects!!

Homework:  Due this Thursday.  They will write what they already have learned about one of the insects that they have observed in our classroom.  Thanks for your help in this!

Math:  We are working with 2-dimensional shapes and will have some 3-dimensional shape activities this week.   We are learning about vertices, lines segments, faces, sides, line rays, and end points this week.

Homework:  Homelinks 8.5-8.8 this week-we will try and do 8.8 in the classroom on Thursday since there is no school this Friday.

Weekly Overview April 2,2018

Welcome back from Spring Break!!  Hope everyone had a good week and hope I see everyone back today!!  I missed them all!!!

First things first-we need snacks!!  Thanks:)

Science:  I am excited to start a new science unit this week-we will be studying Plants and Insects!!  Should be a lot of fun and a lot of learning and exploring!!  I will be ordering Preying Mantis egg sacs, Painted Lady eggs, and silkworm larva.  We will be observing all development and be caring for these animals-learning about their habitats and life cycle developments.  We have already planted in the classroom (hope you heard about that), but will be planting more, inside and outside!!

Math:  We start our new Unit 8-Geometry and Arrays.  This week we will work with attributes of 2-Dimensional Shapes, comparing triangles, pentagons, and hexagons, and working with quadrilaterals.  We will also be continuing to understanding  multiplication and division-everyone is getting better and better with this!!  Work a bit extra at home if your child needs the practice!  Thanks

Homework:  Monday through Thursday, homelinks 8.1-8.4.  Thanks

Language Arts:  We will be working on comparing and contrasting stories.  We will also be working on the prefix over-, and words with or and ore.  Our stories will include learning about our environment through plants and insects!

Homework:  Your child will have a writing assignment-they should tell me about their Spring Break-  Most of them have already!!  Lots of excited kids this morning!!  Due Thursday.

We will also be sending home information about an Insect Project that your child will work on and complete at home.  This project will be due May 4th, but more information to come later this week.  They will have to be thinking about an insect that they will want to research.  Thanks

Social Studies:  We will be working on geography and map skills this week.  We are also continuing our 2nd step program and our calm classroom lessons.  Your children are now running the calm classroom lessons!!!  Ask your children about them.

Weekly Overview March 19, 2018

We have some fun things planned for this last week before Spring Break!!

Please help your child remember to wear Green on Wednesday!!!

Math:  Today we will complete Unit 7 in math!!  We will review counting, measurement,using information in a chart and finding a target number.

We will have our Unit 7 test tomorrow.

Homework:  Practice Unit 7 test for tonight.  Tomorrow, Tuesday, no homework-test day.  I will then give them a worksheet both Wednesday and Thursday for homework-no homelinks this week.

Language Arts:  We are reading and learning about Women We Should Know this week.  We are mainly focusing on scientist.  Who can your child tell you about?  We are also going to practice the 300 most common English Words this week.

Homework:  Your child has a worksheet-book report with a Coat of Arms about a character in the book, due Thursday.Thanks

Social Students:  We continue with our 2nd step program, calm classroom curriculum and learning about Women we should Celebrate!!

Science:  We will finish our work with TarPul, erosion and engineering this week.  We will move on to Plants and Insects when we come back.

Weekly Overview March 12, 2018

Good Morning and hope you had a nice weekend.

Thanks for snacks coming in!!  We can always use more!  You should have your child’s mid-term report.  Please review with your child and make an appointment to see me if I indicated it or if you would like one.  Thanks

Supplies:  We are running low on tissue paper (Kleenex), crayons, markers, and colored pencils.  If you are able, please bring extras in!!  Thanks

Remember Logo day is Wednesday-wear green!!  I also have a few logo shirts left in my room-$10.00!!

And let’s all wear green on Friday!!!

Language Arts:   We will continue to focus on stories about Women we Should Know.  Ask your children what they have learned!!  This week we will focus on a story about Helen Keller.  In all our readings, we will discuss main ideas and details.  We will also work on summarizing and inference.

Homework:  Your child will have a writing assignment that is due Thursday.  Please encourage them to write about a woman that we should know about.  Due Thursday.  Please remember that your child should be reading at least 30 minutes each night!!  I know they all love to read:)!, so this is basically a given at this point!!  Many thanks!!

Math:  We will complete lessons 7.5 through 7.8.  These lessons focus on measurement.  We will work with inches and yards and centimeters, decimeters, and meters.  Practice at home!!  We are also going to graph our information and measurements and look at our data.  Your child should be adding and subtracting up to 4-digit numbers!!  Practice at home!

Homelinks:  7.5-7.8, Monday through Thursday.

Science:  We will use our TarPuls this week and see how we are at our engineering skills.  How strong was your child’s TarPul?  How did they know how to strength it?  By Thursday ask them these questions!!  Thanks!

To help welcome in March 17th and Spring-we will also do some planting this week!!

Social Studies:  We are reading and writing and learning about Women We Should Celebrate all week!!  Ask your child what they are doing!!

Weekly Overview March 5, 2018

What wonderful work we saw and showed during Black History Month!!  Hope we all learned about new people and lessons!!

March is Woman’s Month.  We will be keeping track of woman writers, illustrators, people we should know, etc and focus on Women how have made a difference in the world!!

Language Arts:  Focus on women and what we should know and learn!!  We will focus on comprehension when we read and inference and prediction in stories.

Homework:  I will give the same sheet for writing homework, but encourage your child to write about any WOMAN they want:).

The writing assignment is due this Thursday.

Math:  Unit 6 is completed, and we will start Unit 7 today.  Unit 6 assessment had two parts.  Please review your child’s work and help them at home where you see it is needed.  Thanks for your help!!

Unit 7 is 2-, 3-digit addition and subtraction!  Practice at home!!  We will also be working on measurement and data.

Homelinks:  Lessons 7.1-7.4 this week.  Also, Unit 7 family letter will be going home today, along with the homelinks.

Social Studies:  Our focus will be on learning about Women we should know.  We are also working with maps and geography-learning physical locations of our world!!

Science:  What can your child tell you about geoengineering?  What do they know about structures and supports when planning on building or using the ground for support?

 

Weekly Overview February 26, 2018

Can’t believe it is almost March!  We had a really busy and fun February!  Even though African-American History Month is coming to an end, the spirit of the lessons will continue on throughout the year!  Everyone did a really nice job in giving their reports!  Thanks for all of your help!!  I saw a lot of learning going on!!  And…proud students!

Language Arts:  This week our focus will be on pronouns, words ending in -ed, and -ing, story structure and infer/predict.  Inferring  and predicting can be challenging for 2nd grade.  Practice at home when your child is reading!!

Homework:  Your child will have a writing assignment that is due this Thursday.  Your child should also be reading each night for at least 30 minutes!!

Math:  We will cover lessons 6.7-6.10 this week.  We will have a practice assessment going home on Thursday and an Unit 6 assessment on Friday.  We are adding and subtracting using a variety of strategies.  Please review these at home with your child.

Homelinks:  Homelinks Monday through Thursday, please a unit review also on Thursday.

Social Studies:  We will continue through this week reading and writing about people we should know who have contributed to our society.

In March we will start some projects about Women’s History and their contributions to the world.

Science:  What can your child tell you about erosion and stability in the ground.

Weekly Overview February 20, 2018

We have received so many wonderful Black History projects!  Your child has signed up for their day to present their project!  They also went home with a guide to help direct their talk.  Hope it was helpful.

Tomorrow is our Black History Month Assembly.   The program is tomorrow night!  Come and see our displays!!

Language Arts:  This week we will continue to read and write about our Black History Month projects.

Homework:  Your child will have a writing assignment that is due FRIDAY!!!  They should write two or three facts that they learned about their African-American person and one question that they still have.  They can illustrate their work.

Math:  Lessons 6.4-6.6 this week.  We are reading and working n number stories (2-digit addition and subtraction).  We are recording some of our information in graphs.

Homelinks:  6.4 through 6.6 Tuesday through Thursday.

Social Studies:  All week we will be listening to students give their report on their person.  Your child signed up and knows what day they will give their report.

Science:  I will try and finish our story on Nepal and Tarpuls and we will have an erosion lesson Thursday afternoon.

Weekly Overview February 12, 2018

Hope everyone had a fun snow day!  I sure remember as a kid, how fun that was!!

Please remember that the Black History Month Projects are due this Friday!  Hope it is going well!  Your child should have, at least, 2 or 3 paragraphs written at this point!!  The whole report can be presented on a poster, or as a written research paper-whatever works for you!

The Gallery walk is Wednesday, February 21st!!  There is a grandma dessert competition!  A second flyer is going home today!

Your child’s report card is going home today.  Please schedule an appointment if you would like one, or if I have requested one.  You can email me, or write me a note and I will get back to you.

There is also a canned food drive going on this week!  Please have your child bring non-perishable items in if you can:)

We are in need of snacks again!!  Actually, I should say that we are out of snacks:(

Language Arts:  Your children will start to present their projects as soon as they start to come in.  I will send home a “Talk Rubric” to help organize their 2-3 minute presentation.  Thanks for your help in this!!  Your child will sign up for their talk when they bring their project in.  Thanks

We will continue to read about and discuss African-American people we should know all week.  Our reading will focus around these stories.

Homework:  Your child should work on their project each night and turn it in no later than this Friday.  Thanks

Your child should also be reading 20-30 minutes each night.  Please help your child with this, if needed.

Math:  Your child took their Unit 5 assessment last week.  I will get them to you sometime this week.  We will begin Unit 6 today.  The unit focused on writing and answering number stories.  We will also work on solving 2-digit addition problems.  Practice these as home if you see that your child does not have this secured.  Thanks.  We will practice in class.  We will also be working at bar graphs.  We will complete lessons 6.1-6.4 this week.

Homelinks:  6.1-6.4- Monday through Thursday.

Social Studies:  Our focus is on Black History Month.  We are also working our way through second-step, our building classroom community program.

Science:  Can your child show you where Nepal is on a map?  Can they explain what is happening in a village there?  What is a TarPul and what are we learning about erosion?

 

Weekly Overview February 5, 2018

Happy Monday everyone!!

Thanks for the snacks coming in-we go through 5 snacks each week!!

Some parents have asked me about supplies.  We could use more colored pencils and markers!!  Thanks for bringing extras in, if you are able!!  Tissues (Kleenex) is also needed.  Thanks

The second semester is over and we are on to the second half of second grade!!  So excited!!  Report cards go home this week.  Please schedule an appointment with me if I have requested it!!  Thanks so much!  It is so fun working with smart, great students!!

Language Arts:  It is Black History Month and we will be focusing a lot of our reading, writing, and social studies work on African-Americans that we should know and the history behind our country.  We will also be talking about contractions and ordinal numbers this week.  Practice at home!!  Thanks

I hope you got your child’s “old” name tag.  Please use it as a guide to practice all words and information on it!  Thanks

Homework:  Each night your child should do some work on the African-American Project.  Please guide them in learning more about the person that they have chosen.  They should complete one to two paragraphs each week.  The final due date is February 16th.  Thanks for all your help in this.  I will also give the kids time in class to do some research, and ask your child about this at home.  They should have taken notes when we do this in class, so this can also be added to their report.

As always, please make sure that your child is reading each night.

Math:  We will finish lesson 5.10-working with money and counting and adding.  We will go on to lesson 5.11 and 5.12, then we will have our Unit Test 5 this Thursday.    A review will come home Wednesday night for practice.  We will be working on adding two-digit numbers this week.  We will focus on two different strategies.  Practice these at home.

Look for your child’s  Math Journal 1 coming home this week and complete any pages with your child that we did not get to or that you think your child needs extra practice on.  Thanks

Homework:  5.10 and 5.11-Monday and Tuesday.  Then, a practice test will go home on Wednesday for homework-please return on Thursday.  Thanks

Social Studies: We will read, write, and focus on Black History Month people and events.

Science:  We are reading about a true story that took place in Nepal that involves engineering and the need to cross a river.  Everyone seems really to be enjoying and learning.  Ask your children about this story.  We will also, this week, experiment with different land forms and erosion.

Weekly Overview January 29, 2018

Wow-Can’t believe how January flew by for me in the classroom!

A reminder that this Thursday is Raise your Glass!!!

Also, no school for students this Friday-it’s a professional development day.

Thanks for the few snacks coming in, but still need more-we try and have snack every day!!  Many thanks!!!

***Tonight, your child will have a packet about their Black History Month project.  Please help them decide who they want to do their project on, they should write the name on the last (back) sheet, you should sign, so I know  you are aware of this, and return the packet.  We will note who you and your child choose, then the whole packet will go home again!  You will keep and use as a helpful guide:).  The written assignment and poster is due February 16th.  You and your child have three weeks to work on it!!  Do about a paragraph or two a week and that will spread the research and project out nicely!!  I will also be sending home a guideline for the presentation soon.  Each child will have a few minute talk about their project.  Take a few days to think about it with your child and return by this Wednesday.

Have fun and thanks!!  These will all be displayed for our Gallery walk on February 21st, a Wednesday.

Language Arts:  We will be spending this week on reading and writing about African-Americans we should know and why we should know them.

Homework:  We will not have the typical writing assignment that is due each Thursday.  Just work on the Black History Month Project.  You can have your child bring in, each Thursday, what they have work on so far, if you/your child would like.

Math:  We will complete lessons 5.7 through 5.10 this week.  These lessons focus on subtraction, counting up and down on a number line and number stories.

Homework:  Your child will have Homelinks Monday through Wednesday.  On Thursday, I will give your child a number facts packet that they can work Thursday evening or Friday.  It does not need to be returned.  Thanks

Social Studies:  We will focus on Black History Month and do some research on People we should know and your child will have time to do some research and take what they learn home, to incorporate into their project.

Science:  We will work with soil, sand and silt and see how size influences the path of water.
