Weekly Overview December 13, 2010

Happy Holidays!!!!

Our Assembly will be this Thursday at 9:30 and 1:30.  Both shows are the same, please come when you can!!!!  Your children should wear something festive-white, green, red, blue–maybe boys wear black or dark pants with a white or other collared shirt…girls wear something fancy or fun that you two decide!!!  We will be sitting on the stage floor for one of the numbers, so just be aware of that if your child is wearing a dress or skirt!!!  They all look wonderful!!  I hope you have been practicing the songs at home!!!  They all have had the words for several weeks!!  Thanks for your help.  Be sure to ask your child about the performances that they are in (one is with our buddies!!!)

We will have a holiday party after the second performance on Thursday.  Please bring in snacks, drinks, etc.  We will also have a small party in the afternoon on Friday (we can eat any of the extra treats left over.)

We are doing lots of art and murals for the Gallery Walk Thursday morning!!!!  Hope you can come and enjoy!!

Language Arts:  Your child took a test this morning on our story/concepts last week.  We are starting to talk and do many activities around extended response-ask your child about this.  I will make a copy of a rubric this week for you to look at with your child over break.  I am also going to send home an extra reading practice book for your child to do over break-again, I will not collect this but it will be very helpful for your child to complete the book and for you to review with them.  Thanks.

Homework:  Your child will have their Journeys book and the Lesson 10 Focus Wall sheet with them.

Homework:  Please have them review the spelling words and target words.  Have them read the main selection Jose! Born to Dance and have them practice intonation.  The book must come back to school tomorrow!!!

Tuesday and Wednesday evening homework:  Your child should answer the question:  How does this story relate to me?   Do I have a connection?  One paragraph written Tuesday.    For Wednesday, in one paragraph your child should answer – How is this story different from the story we read last week?  Both paragraphs are due Thursday morning.  An illustration is extra credit.

Math:  Lessons 4.10 and 4.11.  Then on Wednesday we will have our Unit 4 math Test.  Your child will have their Math Journal 1 tomorrow for practice and review for the test on Wednesday.

No math homework Wednesday.  Math facts worksheet for Thursday homework, due Friday.

Science and Social Studies:  We have extra assembly practice and holiday art projects, we will get to these 2 subjects if we have extra time this week.

Art:  Lots going on!!!

Have a wonderful holiday break and we’ll see you next year!!!  Wow!!

As always, thank you for all your help!!!

Weekly Overview December 6, 2010

Yeah!!!  I am very happy to have your children 5 days this week!!!  We have much to cover!!!!

Just some reminders-Holiday Winter Assembly is December 16, 2010.  Your children will be singing in it, so hope you can come at 9:30 or 1:30.  Also, we will have a gallery walk that morning through out the school so you can see all the art work displayed that Ray Students have been creating.  Hope you have some time to enjoy this before school on Dec. 16th.

We didn’t go outside today, but please have your child prepared for cold days when we do go out!!! Hats, gloves, etc.  Thanks.  But…please remember that Monday is gym day and if your child has boots on, they need to bring their gym shoes!!!!!  Some kids forgot today!!!!

Language Arts:  We are on Lesson 9 -Discussions will focus on reading for accuracy (practice at home), writing letters, using commas, and adding spelling words and target words that we will focus on.  Your child will have their focus wall lesson 9 with them today.  I am going to start making two copies-one for school for the week, and one to take home on Monday.  I am really trying to be “more green”, but I think I will cut back on paper somewhere else.  🙂  Anyway, please review this sheet with them, as always.

Homework:  Homework this week is around our Solar System Unit.  Your child will make one page of a book that we will put together for our classroom library.  They have a sheet with them – they have several sheets with them  (for drafts).  They have picked a word to do a report on.  They should use at least 3 references when writing their informative paragraph that is due this Friday.  Ask to see the worksheet (both front and back.)  They will also do an illustration in the box.  They are already excited about this!!!  Hope they have fun.   As always, have your child bring in their rough drafts through out the week, so show other students what they are doing-this always helps to get everyone going.  Thanks.

Math:  Lessons 4.6 though 4.9 will be covered this week.   Decimals with Money, the Thousandths place, metric measurement and measuring in centimeters will all be covered.  We will also, at least once a week, have some kind of timed test (multiplication, division, addition and/or subtraction (now using decimals) to keep up our practice.

Science:  We are reading about the Solar System and working on some worksheets to go along with this unit!!!  Ask what they know!!!

Social Studies:  This week we will continue to discuss the three branches of government.  We will also discuss and make a list of different monuments that are in Washington D.C. and through out the U.S.

Art:  We have a great lesson-Optical Illusions–that will be on display for the Assembly!!!!

Have a great week, and as always, thanks for your help.
