Novemember 3 through 7

The 7th is a non attendance day for students
The 11th is a holiday and the 12th is report card conferences.
Please plan your childcare ahead of time.

Please look for the conference sign up sheet in the take home folder.  Indicate first, second and third choice times and return the form to me.  I will then sign you up in the closest available time slot and send the form back to you to confirm your time.

A giant thank you to all of the parent Chaperones who braved the weather to help us make the trip a success.  Our next trip will be to the Field Museum on November 18th.  We will not need as many chaperones for that trip.  Please let the classroom teacher know if you are available.

Writing Choices:
Choice 1:A Description: Pretend you are a musical instrument!  What do you look like?  How are you played?  What kind of sounds do you make?  Write about yourself.

Choice 2:Pretend a famous singing group is coming to your school. Write a speech that introduces the group.  You might tell about the group’s music and how the group became famous.

Weekly Overview October 27, 2014

Dear Families,
Please be respectful of our choice to leave Halloween festivities at home this year.  Our trip to the farm is strictly a fall, harvest, animal, life cycle study.  Please leave costumes at home or in backpacks.  Additionally, please keep candy at home.

We need chaperones for our trip this Friday.  Please let the classroom teacher know if you are able to attend.  I do have 5 parents, which is great, but more can come!!!

Our trip to the movie at Logan Center has been postponed.  Please look for further updates in the take home folder.  A giant thank you to all the parents who have responded in such a timely manner to our Harlem Dance Theater request.  If you have not paid for that trip yet please do so ASAP as we will lose our seats if we do not pay for it this week.

Thanks for all the snacks coming in!  Your children are enjoying!!!

Most importantly, please make sure that your child has a time to read by themselves each night, or that you make time to read with them!!!  I am seeing very happy readers in the classroom!!!

Weekly Overview October 20 to 24

The 28th we will walk to the U of C to see a movie titled “Worms”. If you are a parent that is available to chaperone please let us know right away. We also need chaperones for the 31st trip to the Children’s farm.

Please donate Clorox Wipes to help our efforts to limit the spread of germs in the classroom.

As the weather becomes more unpredictable, please consider dressing your child in layers. We will try to go out of doors as much as possible. Remember if your child is not well enough to participate in the mid day recess they should not be sent to school. There is no one to monitor kids separately from the whole group at lunch.

Writing Choices:
Choice 1: An Ad: Pretend your family owns a summer camp. Write an ad about the camp. Tell why children will like it. Tell about the indoor and outdoor activities they will experience there. Be creative.

Choice 2:A Diary: Pretend you went on a camping trip in the woods. Make a diary that tells about your trip. Did anything funny or exciting happen? For each day of your trip write the date and what you saw and did.

 

Language Arts:  We will have a test on Lesson 6 on Friday.  I will allow your kids to take their book home this week-to practice-but the books have to come back to school every day!  We use them every day!  Let’s see how this goes.  Thanks.

Math:  We will have a math test this Thursday on Unit 2.  The homework assignments are a good study guide.  Thanks.

Weekly Overview October 14, 2015

Thanks for all the Field Trip forms coming in!!  They are both due!  Please email me or write a note if you want to go on the trip and I will let you know if we have space!  Thanks

We will also have a Hispanic Heritage Month assembly tomorrow and your children will see some Ray School students dance and also experience professional dancers performing!  It should be great!

Language Arts:  We will be taking a star reading test tomorrow and as soon as I get the results, I will pass them on to you.  It is just another reading test on the computer that gives us more information about what level your child’s reading level is.  I’ll give it about 3 times this years, sharing results each time.

Also this week we will be reviewing all the previous 5 lessons-we will not move on to another lesson until next week.  There is no test this Friday!  We will be re-reading some of the stories and reviewing vocabulary and working on our writing.  We will read about Johnny Appleseed toward the end of the week and work on some fun activities to go along with the story.

Your children are also reading and taking AR test whenever they finish a story.

Homework:  The Reading log, as usual, is due each Monday and the writing assignment is due each Friday.  Thanks for your help in these two activities.

Math:  We will continue to take a few timed-fact test each week.  Your child should know they single-digit facts and be working on addition facts of two or more digits.  We will complete lessons 2.9 through 2.2.11, working on name collections-numbers can be names in many ways, working on addition and subtraction number facts, number sequences, and we will provide experiences with identifying missing numbers in number pairs using “What’s my rule?”

Science:  We will read a thermometer, explore properties of air by compressing air in a tube and by making and watching a parachute move through the air!

October 14 to 17

Parents,
Second Grade has been invited to attend the Film Festival at UC Logan on Tuesday, 10/28 at 9:45 am. The program is called ‘Worms’ and it is an animated feature film. The film is 90 minutes long. Tickets are free, no buses provided (a short walk). Please look for a field trip permission slip in the next few days and return it as soon as possible.

Choice 2:How can you help make your home a safe place? Think about what you would do if there is a fire. What special rules should you follow in the kitchen? Write a list of home safety rules.

Weekly Overview October 6, 2014

Thanks for all the $85.00 class fee that you have brought in!!!  Also, thanks to the parents who have given our class a snack!!  Everyone is eating every afternoon, so please bring in a healthy snack for 25 students!  Thanks.  When you do, your child puts a sticker next to their name on our snack chart!  So fun!:)

A tentative field trip schedule will go home today.  Please ask your child to see it. (copier not working-maybe look for tomorrow-thanks)

Language Arts:  We will complete Lesson 5 this week.  Our focus will be on Story Structure, Punctuation, singular and plural nouns, the Blends of r, l, and s. and base words and endings of -ed, -ing.  Our target words this week are wonderful, noises, quiet, sprinkled, share, noticed, bursting and suddenly!  These words can be used in the Writing that is due Friday!!!

Your child might be talking about a reading group that they are in.  Ask them about this and about the AR tests that they are taking!  Ask them about their Journal, their Writer’s Notebook and the 100 words that they read today!!  We are working on fluency and how we read.

Homework:  Your child and you should be completing the homework Reading Log each night and reading for at least 15 minutes per night.  Also, the writing assignment is on the back of the reading log page!  Please have your child working on their writing each night.  Several students are not doing their writing assignment and are not turning it in on Friday.  Thanks for your help!!

Math:  We will complete lessons 2.6 through 2.9 this week.  The focus will be Subtraction from Addition, Fact Families, Exploring Weights and Scales, and Name Collections ( a number can be named in many ways    10 =  12-10, ten, ten tally marks, 2+2+6, etc.  We will also be taking fact timed tests each week and your child’s test will be made more challenging, according to their skill level!

Homework:  Monday through Thursday, one homelink each night.

Social Studies:  We are discussing Communities using the words, government, government agencies, citizens, law and taxes.  Ask your child what they know!  Thanks.
