Jan 30 to Feb 3

 

Dear Parents,

PTO fund raiser is this Thursday evening at the Prometory on 53rd and Lake Park. Please join us for some good times for a great cause!

This Friday was to be a planning and preparation day for teachers, but as many of you already know, the Board of Education has declared that it will be a furlough day for teachers. The result of the 4 furlough days is a 2% cut in pay for teachers. This is in addition to a pay reduction last year. We will be meeting at City Hall on Friday to let the mayor and they city know how distructive this is for students and the families we serve. Please join us if you are able. More information can be found on the Parents for Teachers web site and at Raise your Hand web site.

PLEASE note that the projects are due NO LATER than February 10th. If you still have questions about the project do not hesitate to ask. Writing application is due Thursday this week.

Please keep sending snacks, pencils and water bottles. We go through snacks and pencils farely quickly and each child should have a water bottle with sports lid to stay hidrated.

Home assignments: (Reading logs are due each Monday. Writing assignments are due each Friday.)

January 17 to 20

Tomorrow we are going to the theater.  Chaperones have already been established.  For those of you who wanted to come please consider coming on our next trip.  Our apologies, the seating was so limited.  It is recommended that your child bring a lunch, though they will still be able to get a school lunch if they are not able to bring their own.  It is also recommended that the kids wear a Ray school shirt.  These can be purchased for $10 through Ms. Clement rm 215.

Please look for the instructions and rubric for the African American Heritage project in this week’s folder.  Projects will be due in mid February.

This week please review sight words to date.  Also review types of sentences and the importance of story structure.

We will take a unit math test this Friday on time, place value, measurement in inches and centemeters, and counting coins.

Please send a water bottle with a sport lid.

Please note that if your child did not turn in a writing application last week they currently have a 0 (F) in grade book and should plan to make up that assignment.

A “Writing Application” project will last all 5 days of the week Monday: Plan (choose from the 2 topics provided) Tuesday Draft, Wednesday revise (make it better) Thursday edit (check for errors) Friday publish (turn it in to the teacher)

Writing Application: Note parents may “share the pen” if needed as we start the year and turn it over to more independent writing as we progress.

Choice 1:Bully bully
Write about a time you have witnessed bullying.  Tell what you did in response to the bullying.

Choice 2:Theatre
Write about a time you attended a show at a theatre.  Tell what you saw and with whom you attended.  Was it a movie, a dance performance, a musical concert, or a play?

January 9 to 13

Happy New Year to all!!

We have exciting plans in the new year.  This month is African American Heritage Month.  Second grade will participate in the event with our second research project/presentations.  We will all be reading a novel titled The Hundred Dresses.  This book revolves around some important concepts involving school bullying.  We will also attend the Chicago Children’s Theatre’s theatrical interpretation of the book.  Math this month continues to explore place value, measurement and addition and subtraction drills.  In science we will embark on a new study; more information to come in this subject.

Room 214 is experiencing Pencil Panic!  Please look around your home and contribute any pencils you are not using.

BE ADVISED: Please have your child dress in layers.  Mark clothing articles with child’s name.  We plan to go outside whenever the weather allows.  Please also make sure your child has a water bottle with sport lid.  We need snack donations.

What zoo animal always carries a trunk but never has to pack? An Elephant!  Write more riddles about animals in the zoo.

Choice 2:Zoo Animal Favorites
In your opinion which is the most interesting animal in the zoo?  Explain why you think so.  Try to include some facts about your animal choice.
