January 9 to 13

Happy New Year to all!!

We have exciting plans in the new year.  This month is African American Heritage Month.  Second grade will participate in the event with our second research project/presentations.  We will all be reading a novel titled The Hundred Dresses.  This book revolves around some important concepts involving school bullying.  We will also attend the Chicago Children’s Theatre’s theatrical interpretation of the book.  Math this month continues to explore place value, measurement and addition and subtraction drills.  In science we will embark on a new study; more information to come in this subject.

Room 214 is experiencing Pencil Panic!  Please look around your home and contribute any pencils you are not using.

BE ADVISED: Please have your child dress in layers.  Mark clothing articles with child’s name.  We plan to go outside whenever the weather allows.  Please also make sure your child has a water bottle with sport lid.  We need snack donations.

Happy Winter Everyone!

This Friday we will be a part of an informal winter celebration assembly at 9:15am.  Parents are welcome, but be mindful that there may be standing room only.

This week’s homework will be light.  A double sided reading contract will be sent home for the break as well as this week’s reading log.  Please return all 3 reading contracts to receive a pizza coupon in January. There will a math assignment today through Wednesday.  No writing application this week.  We encourage you to have your child find authentic writing experiences such as thank you cards or letters to extended family. None of this writing is meant to be turned in to us though.

We have just this week and next before our long break.  In these weeks the weather may prevent us from going outside, but when the temperature is above 25* we will go out.  Please send your child dressed for that possibility.

Try to label clothes and other belongings with name and room number.  The new lost&found policy involves donating all unclaimed items to Goodwill at the end of each month.

We will continue our home assignments right through the holidays Well, reading daily is highly recommended)

This week and next we will have our regular assignment schedule and for the 2 week break we will provide a double sided reading contract.

We have a very limited number of seats for our January 18th field trip.  Interested chaperones should speak directly to the classroom teacher to find out if any space is still available We are running very low on snacks again.

This week in second grade students will be taking a look at clocks and measurement. We will practice making inferences and predations in our reading.  Students will also learn about the prefixes “pre” and “mis”.

Note only 9 students in room 214 turned in writing applications last week.  This means a 0 or F in gradebook for the missed assignments.  Please make sure your child keeps up with home assignments.

As the weather continues to be unpredictable we would like to suggest a few things.  First, consider packing a change of clothes (socks included).  Second, please try to label your child’s belongings with name and classroom number for faster retrieval if lost. Finally please please provide your child with a water bottle with sports lid to have at their seat.  The radiant heat makes the air very dry in the school building.

We are running very low on snacks again.

Pretend you are a very smart farmer.  You have just built a wonderful new barn for your animals.  Draw a picture of your barn.  Then write about it.  Tell what it looks like and how it is special.  Stretch your imagination!

Dear Warrior Parents,

Please turn in the lunch forms even if you do not intend to have your child eat the school lunch. The forms are a very improtant part of the funding for the school.

We are going to the Field Museum on Wednesday. Please pack a large lunch for your child.  It is reccomended that it be put inot a disposable bag so that we do not lose any lunch pails on the trip.

We need snacks.  Please consider buying something healthy for the whole group the next time you are at the market.

Students need water bottles for their desks. as the weather gets cold we are experiencing very dry air in the school and we get very thirsty.  It is difficult to get out to the fountain without disrupting lessons.

Be aware that we are asking students read every day at home even on weekends and over holidays.  Please try to keep up with the reading contracts so students can receive the pizza incentive each month( 4 contracts a month arerequired)

Pretend your family owns a summer camp.  Write an ad about the camp.  Tell what children will like about the place.  Tell about indoor and outdoor games and sports children will play there.

Pretend you went on a camping trip in the woods.  Make a diary entry that tells about your trip.  Did anything funny happen?  For each day of your trip, write the date and what you saw and did.

Wierd Whacky Week!

Wednesday is Parent Conference day (no school for students.)  Students are welcome to attend the conferences.  Conferences last only 10 minutes, so please come prepared with any questions you have.  If you require additional time you will be asked to set a separatee meeting time.  You are invited to email us with a few convenient times (noon to 550pm)

This week students will begin the Native American Research projects.  They are encouraged to read about or watch videos on Native American people of long ago.  Because of the unusual week and the emphasis on research there will not be a writing application due this week.

Please review all sight words we have assigned so far this year.

Math home assignemnets will be as usual.

Ray Warrior Families,

Be aware that our first field trip to the Children’s Center in Palos Park is next MONDAY.  Students will need to bring a lunch.  All Halloween costumes must stay at home that day (No costumes during the day).  Students who need to bring costumes because they do not go directly home after schooll must leave costumes in their backpacks until end of day. Please also note that field trips are a requirted part of our curriculum and thus should not be missed.  If your child has already experienced the destination please note that we are doing extentions of the trips in class and the benefit of revisiting the place with this years peers is important to us.  Please do NOT use attendance on trips as a disciplinary consequence.
We have limited space and all of the teachers have already identified the chaperones for this trip.  Thank you to everyone who volunteered.

Please pay your $85 class fee as soon as possible

My (Ms. Sheridan) apologies for not having posted the Interview project on the blog.  If you need a new copy let one of us know.  These interviews are now past due. We are wrapping up the family project this week.

If you have not paid your class fees please do so asap.

There are 2 trips coming up.  October 31 has an $11 fee.  Please return the trip slip with the fee. (Please put the cash in an envelop or baggy with your child’s name on it) The November 2 trip has no fee, but we MUST have the signed permission slip.

Pretend you live in a place where the season never changes.  The weather is the same every day.  Write a story about this place.  Tell what the weather is like.  Is it always sunny, rainy, or snowy?  Tell about the people’s homes and clothes.

October 13 6pm PTO & LSC groups will meet in a combined meeting in the cafeteria

October 31 is our first field trip.  We will go to the children’s farm.
Look for the permission slip in the take home folders.  Chaperones do not need to pay the fee.  Chaperones are volunteers for the school and must ride the bus with us and help to monitor student safety.  Please refrain from cell phone use on the trip as much as possible.

We are a smidgen behind in our Family Interview project.  Please submit interview writing by this Friday or earlier. Late projects will not be accepted past Friday the 14th.

How can you make your home a safe place?  Think about what you should do if there is a fire at home.  What special rules should you follow in the kitchen?  Write a list of home safety rules.

Choice 2: The Family Pet
If you were to go on vacation and leave your pet with a friend or family member, what instructions would you leave?   How will you tell the pet sitter to care for your pet?

October 6th is a special day! Please plan to bring your family early to the north playground for a celebration of Ray. Schools all around the country will be doing similar celebrations of public schools.

We are tentatively planning a field trip to the Children’s Farm at the Center on October 31st. We will need chaperones for that trip. Please let us know if you will be available.

This week you will see a special addition to the homework assignments. Studnets are studying “Family” as a sociological concept. They are to interview a family member and bring excerpts from the interview back to class. We are looking for things that can help us understand families; how they are formed, what makes a family a family, are all families the same etc. You will find the assignment details and a rubric in the child’s folder. We will create a product to display our learning in class once everyone has completed the interviews. DUE DATE October 14th.
